Chapter 18

Jess

I woke with my nose and lips pressed tight to Sidney's soft skin. The instinct to kiss the skin over and over until I covered it all was a hard one but I fought it back.

I'd slept with people, tried relationships on, had sex every now and again. But this was different and I felt her in my bones in a way I'd only ever felt Andi.

I took her into my lungs and held her, never wanting it to end.

We were going to leave town today, escape to another city with its own unrelated problems and its plethora of personalities. I, for one, couldn't wait.

I wanted to kidnap Sid. See if she was different, away from her job and this place. I wasn't some precious stone to guard. Nor was I made of porcelain. Would've cracked a long time ago if the hands of others could easily break me.

I wanted her hands to slide across my naked skin. Her lips on my chest. Her thighs open and spread across my lower abdomen.

I wanted unmentionable things I couldn't speak about. So I mused about them and took only what she was willing to give.

We ate together in her kitchen, trading stares and occasional words. I was getting used to this, being cared for. I'd forgotten what it felt like and when other people tried it never felt this good. I usually hated it, someone trying meant I owed them something. I didn't feel that with Sid. Instead I felt that she could take what she wanted and she never did.

We got in her off-duty car, which was new, versatile, and sporty. The interior was too clean and I had to wonder how often she took it out.

“Can we get some coffee,” I asked. She’d made me coffee but it was one of my comfort crutches and I already craved more. Warm, cold, or sweet; I didn't care.

Soon we'd be on the road without stopping. It'd be nice to have a distracting snack.

My eyes were drawn to the woods as she moved the car over the pretty hand-picked cobblestones.

“Yeah, do you want to stop in town or wait till we get closer to where a starbucks is?”

“Let's wait,” I decided, taken by the barrenness that seemed haunting now since I mostly remembered it in dreams before coming back. I pulled my phone from my pocket and went onto Facebook, the idea was to find someone, someone familiar like the man in the woods.

Why was I so unafraid of him? Everyone in this town spiked a certain level of fear for me, even a sweet friend like Kayla or Craig. The association was there with them. They'd been around when Becs went missing. Perhaps it was as uncomplicated and simple as that.

As I stared down at my phone and began to rifle through alumni who followed my high school, I realized that Sid was right about these two men not exactly being normal. Still, I wanted to try. If I found the
